Lake Plav is part of municipality of Plav, located to the northeast of Montenegro. Plav Lake is the largest area of glacial lake in Montenegro. It is located in the large-Plav-Gusinje valley between Prokletije and Visitor, on 908 meters high, at the place where are the valley of the river Ljuća and Lima. It was created before 24 000 years, at the end of the Ice Age when the climate became much warmer and when the glaciers on our mountains were melting . The average width is 920 meters and the depth 9 meters. Lake Plav has elliptical shape. For a long time in the direction of the south – north 2160 m, and it is the largest width of 1490 m. The length of coastal line of his 7520 m (at medium water level). The lake is 1.99 km2, depth of the lake is in its central part 9.10 m. The water level in the lake is not the same throughout the year, but changed depending on the amount of melting snow and excretion of rainfall in the basin. So, depending on the water of river Ljuca , rainfall, melting snow, river Lim and evaporation on Lake Plav annually occur two maximum water level – in May and December and two minimum – in October and February. The average annual temperature of water in the lake is 8.7 C. The lake is warmest in August, and during the winter months is frozen. Ice usually appears in late December or early January, and keeps to the middle, less frequently by the end of February. Over an area of the frozen lake can be walked.

The water of the lake is clean and transparent to a depth of 4 m. Shades of color change during the day and seasons, depending on the position of the sun, coastal vegetation and the shadow cast by the Visitor. The coast of the lake is low, slightly jagged. A considerable part of the surrounding lakes and shallow part of the lot is full of grass. And shallow coastal belt covered with lush vegetation. Plav Lake is rich in fish, now has branches in the lake, trout, pike, chub, barbel Skobalj and a variety of fish the world provides good conditions for fishing. Besides fishing, inshore Plavskog lakes is possible hunting and the feathery variety of game. The possibility of hunting, fishing, swimming and various water sports are a special advantage for tourism development.
On the origins of the lake, there are various legends. According to one, in place of today’s lake in ancient times St. Sava and spent the night in a small town. Spent the night in the house of a Janus, this is nice it hosted, but he planted a rooster and accused him of theft. Because of this severe insult, Saint Sava host curse words “Never had borned, never to have children and the water trou zou out. The thread is spawned. At this point, with all sides and the flood waters struck the town and so there was a lake. People believe that the lake has a cauldron that is tied to stud with chain and it was left by St. Sava as proof that the place was the town in which he is innocent accused of theft. This place is full of resources and cold springs that called Berberov vortex.
According to another legend, the lake is derived from the Blue tears, girl who cried because of fight betwen her brothers.

Plav lake threatens extinction. Although its waters are renewed every five days, it is every year less and less so for a hundred years will completely change the appearance and property. Ljuca River, which brings the greatest amount of water the lake, snuffers the bed and constantly pour into the lake and river Lim also increasingly getting into the riverbed through drift so that these processes reduce the lake and destroing him. Beside the lake goes main road Berane – Andrijevica – Plav- Gusinje.
